Employees

Every Merdeka employee has equal opportunities in the recruitment process, competency development, performance evaluation, remuneration, and career development regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, race, or social status.

Merdeka firmly believes that people are our most valuable asset and we are committed to continuously improve our human capital management and development in order to create a world-class mining company.

In line with Merdeka’s growing mining operations, byy the end of 2020, Merdeka had2,737 employees, an increase of about 3% from 2019. Around 70% of employees are residents of the districts and provinces where we operate. Employee turnover in 2020 was 4.57%, down from 7.40% in 2019, in line with Merdeka’s efforts to continue to create a safe, comfortable, competitive work environment.

Although there is no gender-based discrimination in employee recruitment, the number of female employees at Merdeka is still low (7 percent compared to 93 percent of male employees at the end of 2020), as is the general condition in Indonesia’s mining sector. By the end of 2020, the representation of women in the Merdeka organization at the non-staff level was 48 percent, followed by support workers at 29 percent. Merdeka continues to provide opportunities for women in the company. One initiative is a program that specialy targets the recruitment of female employees, as was done by Merdeka’s subsidiary, PT Bumi Suksesindo and PT Batutua Kharisma Permai through the Green Operator program. Since 2020, the program has successfully trained and recruited female employees as heavy equipment operators. In addition, since May 2021, for the first time, Merdeka has had female representation at the board of directors level.

In the coming year, Merdeka will conduct a routine survey of employee perceptions to obtain input on work systems, facilities, and infrastructure for further improvement.
