Economic Contribution
Merdeka has a significant impact on state and local government revenues in the mining operation area, through tax and non-tax contributions. In 2020, with the challenges of mining operations in Banyuwangi and Wetar Island, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on all mining operations, Merdeka still posted operating revenues of USD321.9 million with tax and royalty contributions of USD51.6 million.
In addition, Merdeka provides economic contributions through employee salaries and benefits. In 2020, Merdeka paid employee salaries and benefits of US$42.7 million.
Merdeka’s mining operations create jobs for residents of the districts and provinces where we operate; in 2020, local employees account for 70% of our total employees. Our operations also create business opportunities for local businesses as well as through the various community empowerment programs .
